Birkbeck Law School skills workshop: Incorporating legal sources into your assignments

When:
Venue: Online

This workshop is for Birkbeck students studying law. Book your place.

One of the key things all students need to do in a written assignment is to show that they have read widely and can use that reading to develop effective arguments and support their claims. In law, this may include both primary legal sources such as case  law and legislation, and secondary sources such as textbooks and scholarly journal articles. However, incorporating someone else’s words into your own writing effectively is not always easy. This workshop will consider how to include quotations, summaries, and paraphrases of primary and secondary legal sources in your essays, in order to form arguments and support the points you make. We’ll look at ‘reporting phrases’ as a tool for clearly showing the sources of your claims and evidence, conventions for referring to judges and legislation, and consider common issues such as overuse of quotations.

Please note that this session will not cover the mechanics of paraphrasing or how to reference.
