Academic skills workshop: Incorporating primary and secondary sources into your assignments

When:
Venue: Online

This session is for students in the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication. However, it may also be of interest to other students taking a module in some aspects of the arts and humanties.

One of the key things all students need to do in a written assignment is to show that they have read widely and can use that reading to develop effective arguments and support their claims. In Creative Arts, Culture and Communication subjects such as English, film, language studies and linguistics, this may include both primary sources such as films, poetry, literature, plays and artwork, and secondary sources such as textbooks and scholarly journal articles. However, incorporating someone else’s words (or objects) into your own writing effectively is not always easy. This workshop will consider how to include quotations, summaries, and paraphrases of primary and secondary sources in your essays, in order to form arguments and support the points you make. We’ll look at ‘reporting phrases’ as a tool for clearly showing the sources of your claims and evidence, as well as considering how to incorporate images or descriptions of scenes or works of art.

Please note that this session will not cover the mechanics of paraphrasing or how to reference.

Book your place.

If you are not a School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication student but would like to attend this workshop, please contact the organiser directly.
