To mark the publication of Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in History (Little, Brown) by Richard J. Evans, the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology at Birkbeck and the Institute of Historical Research invite you to a roundtable discussion, followed by a reception.

Richard J. Evans is the author of The Pursuit of Power: Europe 1815-1914. He is Visiting Professor at the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology and a Fellow of Birkbeck, University of London, where Eric Hobsbawm taught for many years.

Martin Jacques was Editor of Marxism Today from 1977 to 1991 and persuaded Eric Hobsbawm to write a long series of articles for the magazine, including ‘The Forward March of Labour Halted?’, which had a major impact on modern British politics.

Donald Sassoon wrote his PhD at Birkbeck under Eric Hobsbawm’s supervision. He is the author of One Hundred Years of Socialism: The European Left in the Twentieth Century, a book that Eric regarded as the standard work on its subject.

Eric Hobsbawm & Birkbeck

Eric Hobsbawm (1917–2012) was one of the most influential historians of the twentieth century. He taught at Birkbeck for most of his life and remained President of the College until his death. Eric’s work continues to inspire students and academics around the world. Few scholars have embodied more persuasively what is at the heart of Birkbeck’s mission: a continued commitment to critical enquiry and political change.
