In 1970s Italy, labour unions helped to introduce ‘150 hours courses’, an educational opportunity that would provide secondary education to thousands of workers who had only attended primary school. It was a radical, didactic experiment in Italian labour history that built upon methodologies of life and community histories, as well as histories of women, and shaped not only the lives of workers but also of Italian historians and historiography. Prof. Gilda Zazzara will discuss these experiments with working-class education and its potential resonance with the History Workshops and experiences like those at Ruskin College.
