Poetry and Psychoanalysis
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
Poetry and Psychoanalysis each have their own engagement with lived experience, states of mind, and unconscious mental processes, but from differing perspectives. This event will aim to reflect on the relationship between poetry and psychoanalysis, and what each can offer to the other, and to us as readers, patients, therapists and writers. The speaker, Dr. Susanne Lansman, a poet and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytic Society, will be in conversation with Clea McEnery West, Director of Birkbeck Centre for Counselling and a psychotherapist. Dr. Lansman will read from a mixture of her own poetry and poetry by Charles Simic to illustrate how dream-telling and unexpected rawness of emotional experience are brought together in poetry and in psychoanalytic interpretations.
