Venue:
Birkbeck Clore Management Centre

David Jones, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers joins the School of Law, Birkbeck to discuss the current state of immigration detention in the UK.
The UK detained more than 27,000 people last year with the object of effecting removal. Fewer than half were actually removed.
The cost of administering the detention system exceeds £100 million per year and a further £20 million is estimated to have been paid out in that time in damages. The human cost had been higher still.
This course will examine the operation of the detention system, the policies informing its implementation, the prospects for improvement and change, and the legal mechanisms available to challenge its excesses.
