Eila Campbell Memorial Lecture
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Clore Management Centre
No booking required
The Department of Geography at Birkbeck hosts a biennial public lecture in memory of Eila Campbell, one of our alumni who devoted a large part of her life to geography and, in particular, cartography, and whose connection to Birkbeck spanned more than 50 years.
In line with Eila’s interests, the Department is delighted to welcome Professor Laura Vaughan to speak on her recently published book, Mapping Society: The spatial dimensions of social cartography. From a rare map of yellow fever in eighteenth-century New York to Charles Booth's famous maps of poverty in nineteenth-century London, an Italian racial zoning map of early twentieth-century Asmara, and a map of wealth disparities in the banlieues of twenty-first-century Paris, Mapping Society traces the evolution of social cartography over the past two centuries. Professor Vaughan will examine maps of ethnic or religious difference, poverty, and health inequalities, demonstrating how they serve as both records of social enquiry and inscriptions of social patterns. Further details on her book, as well as an open access version, can be found at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press/browse-books/mapping-society.
This is an hour lecture, closing with a short Q&A session. A drinks reception will follow.
While this event is free, booking is required via this page.
