One of the key things all students need to do in an academic essay is to show that they have read widely and can use that reading to develop effective arguments and support their claims. However, incorporating someone else’s words into your own writing effectively is not always easy. This workshop will consider how to include quotations, summaries, and paraphrases of your readings in your essays, in order to form arguments and support the points you make. We’ll look at ‘reporting phrases’ as a tool for clearly showing the sources of your claims and evidence, and consider common issues such as overuse of quotations.

Please note that this session will not cover the mechanics of paraphrasing or how to reference.
