Overview
There are opportunities each year for Birkbeck doctoral students to gain support for their doctoral studies through a funded studentship. Gaining a funded studentship is a competitive process with important steps and requirements to consider in addition to the process of applying for a place on a PhD programme. If you would like to find out about funded studentship opportunities at Birkbeck this session is for you.

Aims and objectives
Studentship recruitment and selection processes can be complex and this session aims to help demystify the process by providing a chance to:

  • Find out where and when information about doctoral studentships at Birkbeck is made available.
  • Explain the kinds of doctoral funding you could apply for
  • Explain what different sources of funding provide in addition to tuition fees or stipend e.g. research expenses, travel grants, or training costs where these are available.
  • Highlight forthcoming deadlines for studentship opportunities at Birkbeck.
  • Highlight key eligibility requirements, such as home or overseas fee status, academic qualifications, and subject-specific funding availability.
  • Highlight widening participation opportunities aimed at encouraging successful applications from under-represented groups.
  • Provide a summary of timings and features of the selection processes for funded schemes including ESRC UBEL and AHRC CHASE.
  • Find out how about the role of supervisors and the wider research environment when you are preparing a studentship application.
  • Discuss general requirements for funded studentship opportunities and ways to strengthen your application including the scope of projects, and preparedness for research.
  • While this session is primarily focused on studentship applications, we will also touch on key aspects of the PhD programme application process, as both are closely linked.
  • There will be opportunities for attendees to ask questions.

Session lead
The session will be led by the Graduate Research School Manager and draws on experience of the recruitment and selection process for a range of different funders and funding schemes.
