About Community Leadership
Taught by tutors from Birkbeck, University of London, who have run Community Development and Leadership courses in London for over 10 years, these workshops aim to help participants gain skills, knowledge and confidence.
Participants are also encouraged to share their own knowledge and experiences, and network with each other.
The course is made up of 5 in-person sessions taking place weekly. Each week will focus on a different topic:
Wk 1: Community Engagement
Wk 2: Project Development
Wk 3: Community Leadership
Wk 4: Health, Wellbeing and Resilience
Wk 5: Project Evaluation & Next Steps
We recommend participants attend all five sessions. Participants that attend four or more workshops will receive a certificate of participation from Birkbeck, University of London.

Who can take part?
This free programme is for those with an interest in community leadership and development, who would like to come together to learn and share practice with like-minded Camden residents.
Participants are also eligible if they work or volunteer for a Camden organisation but do not live in the Borough.
This is an interactive and very welcoming programme with no educational experience required. A curious mind and an interest in community development within Camden is a great start!
Participants should not have a degree from a UK university as we will be covering skills that are used when studying there.
For questions or queries please contact l.bradnam@bbk.ac.uk.
What will the course cover?
Week 1: Community Engagement
In this first session, we will explore ways to engage local residents in your project. Recruiting volunteers and getting people interested and involved will be explored, as well as developing effective communications to get key individuals and Service Providers on board.
Week 2: Project Development
During the 2nd session, we will cover the different aspects of designing and delivering community projects, including identifying needs, developing clear aims and objectives, recruiting volunteers, fundraising and assessing impact.
Week 3: Community Leadership Styles and Skills
This session will focus on the different skills, styles and ideas of leadership and how these link to community settings, for example in building relationships and understanding local needs. Participants will be able to reflect on their own practice and styles and how to be more effective leaders.
Week 4: Health, Wellbeing and Resilience
Policy makers and service providers often talk about building local wellbeing and resilience, but what does this mean in practice? We will explore the latest research about increasing personal and community wellbeing and look at some case studies to help reflect how your project fits with this popular agenda. Specific issues relevant to Camden will be addressed.
Week 5: Project evaluation and next steps
The last session will give you the opportunity to reflect on what you have learnt during the course, forge connections and action plan your own projects, and explore your next steps to keep progress going!
