Abstract
Regional differences in institutions is a threat for political and economic harmonization. In this paper, we analyze the institutional convergence across the European Union (EU) regions. Preliminary results show that there is continuous improvement fostering institutional cohesion. However, heterogeneity analyses point-out that speed of institutional cohesion is influenced from the enlargement phases of the union. Additional results show that regions of the CEE countries and southern regions belonging to Greece and Spain realize faster institutional convergence. These results remind that enlargement process which fosters further heterogeneity stands as an important element to improve the institutional quality of the late EU members. However, temporal convergence patterns show that historically local convergence reshuffles which reminds the non-stationary evolution of success and failure cases.
