Nudging pathology: researching behaviour change courses in prison and probation
As part of Dr Sarah Marks’ Cognitive Behavioural Therapies: Historical and Contemporary perspectives research, this session will look at Becka Hudson's section of the project - on the development and uses of cognitive behavioural (CBT) interventions in prisons and probation. There are a wide range of CBT courses available across the prison estate, developed and delivered in order to shape and, ultimately, rehabilitate ‘offender behaviour’. These include dedicated courses for types of crime that are conceptualised as relating to imprisoned people’s ‘identities’, including their social connections and political beliefs. Becka will outline some early research about the long durée and more recent political histories of these interventions in criminal justice, and discuss the research process with former prisoners she is currently involved in.
Dreyfus Room, 28 Russell Square.
