The Themersons and Language, screening and introduction
Introduction by Dennis Duncan
Join us for The Themersons and Language, an evening exploring the innovative, boundary-pushing cinema of Stefan and Franciszka Themerson, pioneers of avant-garde film. This event features three remarkable works, introduced by Dennis Duncan.
First, Europa (1931/32), a visual adaptation of Anatol Stern’s futurist poem, presents a searing critique of nationalism through experimental montage and bold imagery. Next, The Eye and the Ear (1944/45) interprets four songs by Karol Szymanowski, translating music into striking visual compositions that expand the limits of cinematic expression. Finally, Erik Van Zuylen’s documentary Stefan Themerson and Language (1976) delves into the Themersons’ lives, artistry, and commitment to exploring language, thought, and film as interconnected creative forces.
Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the world of these visionary artists.
