Editing the Long Nineteenth Century: Recovering Women in the Digital Age is a series of Wikipedia edit-a-thons, held at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Many women of the long nineteenth century have not received the historical attention they deserve. While many had a significant impact on contemporary art, literature, science, politics, social reform, and other important fields, the work to recover these women is only just beginning. Ensuring that these women have a digital presence is a crucial part of making them discoverable for broad audiences and new researchers. The Wikipedia edit-a-thon invites you to participate in the project of increasing the digital presence of the unjustly forgotten women of the long nineteenth century.
These events aim to increase the visibility and discoverability of 'forgotten' women of the long nineteenth century. The first event, #BBKIWD, was held on International Women's Day 2017, and was a great success. An update on the progress made on #BBKIWD is available on our blog.
The next edit-a-thon marks International Women's Day 2018 as well as the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 2018, which first gave women voting rights in UK national elections. The focus of the edit-a-thon is on women in politics and art in the long nineteenth century.
The event is free to attend and open to all.
It will be run as a workshop with a step-by-step introduction to setting up stub articles at the beginning of the session. Please bring your laptop and prepare by following the advice on our Edit-a-thon Cheat Sheet.
If you can't arrive in time to attend the beginning of the session, please feel free to drop in when you can, and stay as long as you like. The workshop tutors will be on hand throughout the session to offer help and answer questions.
