A short, eight-week course to guide you in the basics of writing for stage and screen. Taught by successful writers in historic literary Bloomsbury, and devised by the team behind the successful Birkbeck MA, this course will introduce you to the toolkit you need to craft a script for stage or screen. Whether you are a total beginner or have done courses before and need help to kickstart a project or work on your portfolio, this unique introductory course will inspire you to begin writing your project and help you to develop your craft.

Course content

The course will cover the essential aspects of writing a short script such as:

  • Developing a dynamic and memorable character.
  • Managing stage directions and script layout. 
  • Structuring a convincing story and managing plot. 
  • Writing convinving dialogue. 
  • Writing a treatment for your ideas. 
  • Pitching your ideas to industry professionals. 

Using a mixture of in-class exercises, group feedback and examples from stage and screen, the course will inspire your creativity as well as give you some insights into the basic principles of the craft. Each lesson will cover a different aspect of the writing for stage and screen and aim to stimulate and develop your creative practice.

Learning objectives

This will give you an introduction to the essentials of a writer’s toolkit. Each session will cover a different aspect of the craft of writing for stage and screen and equip you to begin to develop your own project. It will introduce you to the work of other playwrights and screenwriters and enable you to start working on your own ideas.

Course timetable and cost

The course will span eight weeks, taking place weekly from Thursday 8 May to Thursday 26 June inclusive from 18:00 - 20:00 each Thursday, on-campus. Information on the in-person location for each session will be provided in due course. The full course cost is £350.
