In this Cross-London Sociolinguistics Seminar, we will hear from two former Birkbeck PhD students in Applied Linguistics (Dr. Fengzhi Zhao and Dr. Pearl Leung)  about their journeys to find positions in academia and beyond. We have also invited Dr. Anna Marie Trester, the founder of the Career Linguist network and author of Employing Linguistics (Bloomsbury, 2022) to lead a workshop exploring career pathways with current research students in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics across universities in London.

  • Dr. Anna Marie Trester -

    Anna Marie Trester is the founder of Career Linguist - a resource hub and community to support career curiosity for linguists. She is the author of Bringing Linguistics to Work (2017) and Employing Linguistics (2022), and she speaks, consults, teaches and trains as Career Linguist and with organizational partners PIER Consulting Group, The FrameWorks Institute, and Boise State University.

  • Dr. Fengzhi Zhao -

    Dr. Fengzhi Zhao completed her doctoral studies in the Department of Applied Linguistics, Birkbeck from 2018 to 2022. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Her research interests include linguistic landscape, discourse analysis, linguistic ethnography, language and space, and the sociolinguistics of globalisation and cosmopolitanism. 

     

  • Dr. Pearl Leung -

    Dr. Pearl Leung is an Emerging Researcher: Data Analyst in English Language Research, British Council. She completed an MA in Applied Linguistics at UCL in 2017 and further completed a PhD in Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck, University of London in 2022. Her research interests include inner speech, multilingualism, and quantitative methods.
