A base of a permutation group G acting on Ω is a subset of Ω whose pointwise stabiliser in G is trivial. Bases have their origins in computational group theory, where they were used to efficiently store permutation groups of large degree into a small amount of computer memory.
In this seminar, I will cover some of the history and uses of bases, particularly in the context of primitive groups. I will discuss Pyber's conjecture, a prominent conjecture in the area, including the proof of the conjecture by Duyan, Halasi and Maróti; and some recent work contributing to improvements to this proof. I will also outline some current work on determining the size of the smallest bases for irreducible modules of almost quasisimple groups of Lie type.
