Radical Translations: The Transfer of Revolutionary Culture in France, Britain, Italy (1789-1815).

Abstract:

The transnational circulation of radical ideas of equality and rights has deeply shaped European societies since the French Revolution. This paper looks to the revolutionary period to recover the vitality of Europe’s shared radical past and the new, central role of translation within it. In the convulsive political climate of revolution, translation ceased to be simply a new container for an esteemed original. It became a type of direct action, as revolutionaries and their sympathizers turned to translation to express a commitment to radical ideas that they were not always able to put into practice.

I will draw upon research undertaken by the AHRC-funded project ‘Radical Translations: The Transfer of Revolutionary Culture between Britain, France and Italy (1789-1815)’. This project has identified nearly 1000 revolutionary-era translations and constructed a prosopography of some 500 translators in order to map the circulation of radical ideas in the revolutionary period.
