Birkbeck Climate Festival 2025: Sashiko Mending Workshop: Threading, Patching, and Repairing for Planetary Resilience
When:
β
Venue:
Birkbeck Central
Join us for a hands-on session in the art of Sashikoβthe traditional Japanese mending technique. Known as "little stabs," Sashiko has a rich history, originating in the Edo period (1603β1868) as a practical way for farmers and fishermen to repair their clothing. Over time, it evolved into a revered decorative art form, which combines functionality with beauty.
In this two-hour workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of threading, patching, and initiating your own mending journey. Mika Sembongi, an experienced facilitator, will guide you through the process, demonstrating how to use Sashiko to repair woven, non-stretch fabrics such as shirts, jeans, and jackets. Whether you're looking to breathe new life into your old clothes or simply learn a new skill, this workshop will help you appreciate the value of sustainability and the power of creative reuse.
All materials provided: Needle, thread, fabric templates, and full instructions to take home. Participants are welcome to bring their own garments for repair.
This session is part of the Birkbeck Climate Festival and emphasizes the importance of repair and resilience, reflecting broader themes of sustainability, resource management, and community action. It's a chance to practice mending not only clothes but also the connections between people and the planet.
