Turkish football, with more than a hundred-year-old history, comfortably sits within the biggest ten football economies of Europe. The Turkish Football Federation, which was founded in 1923 and became totally independent in 1992 with a law of its own, governs all the football operations from the grassroots level in the smallest of neighbourhoods to the biggest national stage, the Turkish Super League.

With a population of more than 80 million people and being the sixth biggest economy in Europe, Türkiye enjoys a strong football culture although not reflecting this huge potential either to the success on the field or to the number of elite level football players groomed. With four levels of professional football leagues, Turkish football has the second highest number of professional football teams in Europe although without the benefit of exporting young talents to other European leagues.

Traditionally tightly knit with politics, governance of Turkish football is continuously challenged by its own virtues and vices. This lecture will focus on the irregular governance model of Turkish football focusing on the reasons of how and why the great potential always comes with its great challenges in Türkiye.
