An Evening of Hong Kong Anglophone Poetry

When:
Venue: Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square

Book your place

In 1961 the literature scholar A. L. McLeod wrote that Hong Kong, 'where there are relatively large English-speaking populations, [has] produced no literature, even in the broadest sense of the term'. Despite the unmistakable colonial bias, today one may say that Hong Kong writing has grown. This event will see three poets from Hong Kong gathered at Birkbeck to read their poems - to show that Hong Kong now does have its own poetry. Eric Yip won the 2021 National Poetry Competition and was its youngest winner at the time. Jennifer Wong is author to four poetry collections and teaches poetry writing in universities. Hailing from Hong Kong, all  are now based in the UK. Come and witness how creative writing has prospered in Hong Kong.

You will hear poetry from

Eric Yip (winner, 2021 National Poetry Competition)

Jennifer Wong (author of four poetry collections)

and Birkbeck's Michael Tsang will chair and run a Q&A.
