Join us for a screening event at Birkbeck’s cinema, featuring two documentaries by director Fernando Segtowick. The program presents The Last Page of Genesis (A Conquista da Floresta, 2024), a short film set in a future where alien explorers reveal the relentless exploitation of the Amazon by past colonisers, alongside Amazon Mirror (O Reflexo do Lago, 2020), a documentary that examines the social and environmental impacts of the Tucuruí hydroelectric plant built in the Amazon in the 1980s.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Fernando Segtowick led by two distinguished scholars with extensive expertise on the Amazon. Professor Luciana Martins, Birkbeck’s Professor of Latin American Visual Cultures at the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, and Jamille Pinheiro Dias, Director of the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and Co-Director of the Environmental Humanities Research Hub at the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS) at the School of Advanced Study, University of London.

This event is a collaborative initiative supported by Birkbeck’s Centre for Iberian and Latin America Visual Studies (CILAVS) and the University of London’s CLACS.
