A bar-and-joint framework is said to be globally rigid in some fixed dimension d if its edge lengths uniquely determine the framework up to congruence. In 2-dimensions there is an efficient combinatorial description of global rigidity due, in its various parts, to Hendrickson, Connelly and Jackson and Jord\'{a}n. However there is no known extension of this theorem to higher dimensions. In this talk I will describe the 2-dimensional theorem and report on recent work to extend this result to frameworks in 3-dimensions constrained to fixed 2-dimensional varieties.
This talk will include joint work with Bill Jackson and Tom McCourt.
