The canonical problem in the representation theory of finite groups is classifying homomorphisms from a given finite group H into GL(V) for some vector space V. Properties of V as an H-module then become questions about the structure of H as a subgroup of GL(V), and this group is naturally a `reductive algebraic group of classical type'. In this talk, we will discuss a related question, namely `what happens when GL(V) is replaced by an exceptional-type algebraic group?'
