Two similarity classes of matrices are said to commute if they contain commuting elements. The focus of this talk will be on the problem of characterizing pairs of classes that commute. A reduction of the problem to the case of nilpotent classes will be outlined. The nilpotent case has been much studied from the point of view of Lie Theory; I shall present an alternative, more elementary approach which leads to new results. The material of the talk arises from joint work with Mark Wildon (Royal Holloway).
