Picture this! Eighteenth-Century Prints in and out of Books

When:
Venue: Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square

Book your place

How do texts and images work together in books? What happens when prints in books aren't inserted by the publisher, but are instead chosen by the reader and tipped or pasted in? What happens when such prints are rather framed, or pasted around the walls of a room, all the text stripped away?  In this session we'll look at the variety of ways in which prints were used and experienced in the eighteenth century - within, against and beyond text.

From illustrations to almanacs, extra-illustrated books to impressions pasted around walls, come and explore how prints were seen, experienced and used in the eighteenth century with our expert panellists: Luisa Calè (Birkbeck),  Francesca Kaes (British Museum), Ann Lewis (Birkbeck), Kate Retford (Birkbeck), and Ce Stevenson (Birkbeck and British Library).

This event will comprise a series of five short presentations, a panel discussion, followed by Q & A, and a drinks reception.

 All are very welcome!
