Postgraduate History Workshop with Professor Julia Laite

When:
Venue: Birkbeck Central

Room G07, Birkbeck Central, Malet Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 7HY

Free, but booking is essential as places are limited. To book email Katy Pettit (k.pettit@bbk.ac.uk).

In this workshop, Julia Laite will lead a discussion about the place of places in our history writing. Participants will discuss some short readings (details to follow for registrants) and then turn their own hands to writing about a place from their research.  We will explore and discuss techniques of thick description, microhistory, place biography, Indigenous history, environmental history and nature writing to consider what illuminating the textures and nuances of place can bring to historical scholarship.

The workshop is linked to the Raphael Samuel Memorial Lecture which Professor Laite will deliver on Thursday 1st May at Queen Mary, University of London, as part of the British History Today conference. Book your place at the lecture here (HistoryMiddleNowhereRSML25.eventbrite.co.uk).
