Vernon Lee - and Joseph Pilates
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE TUESDAY 6 MAY
Speaker Carolyn Burdett discusses how and why ideas about the body's movement were part of the Victorians' discussion about the importance of art, about why and how multiple new movement forms developed in the early twentieth century, and about one of those movements in particular - Contrology. Contrology is now known as Pilates. The speaker also reflects on 18 months spent undertaking a comprehensive teacher training in Romana's classical Pilates - and why figures like the late-Victorian writer Vernon Lee have haunted the training studio.
The session will end with an invitation to try out some Pilates: all movements are done seated in your chair.
These movements are optional and if you are in any doubt about whether you can do them please just do them in your mind.
