Birkbeck Department of Philosophy invites you to the second in a series of talks for 2018/19 by prominent feminist theorists organised by Birkbeck Women in Philosophy.

‘Were you a part of your mother? Investigating the Nature of Pregnancy'

What is the relationship between the fetus and the pregnant organism? This question has not received the philosophical attention it deserves. The fetus is evidently inside the pregnant organism, but is it also a part of it? I argue that it is, and set out some of the possible consequences that follow.

Elselijn Kingma is Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of Southampton, and Socrates Professor in Philosophy & Technology at the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Kingma has research interests in philosophy of science, applied ethics and metaphysics, with a special focus on medicine, pregnancy and birth. She is lead-investigator on a 5-year, 1.2 million Euro ERC Research Grant investigating the Metaphysics of Pregnancy.
