SCREENING: Ten Years of Film Festival Studies

When:
Venue: Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street

No booking required

We would be delighted if you could join us to celebrate and review a decade of film festival studies at the discussion Ten Years of Film Festival Studies/The Second Decade of a Burgeoning Field.

The event is envisioned as an open exchange between scholars and practitioners who will review the contribution that academia has made to the world of film festivals over the past decade. During the afternoon we will consider what areas of research are most meaningful to practitioners, where film festivals are headed and in turn, how film festival scholarship can continue contributing to the field.

The event will be facilitated by Prof Dina Iordanova (University of St Andrews, publisher of the Film Festival Yearbook series), editor of the Film Festival Reader (2013). Key discussants include Dr Marijke de Valck (Utrecht University, author of Film Festivals: From European Geopolitics to Global Cinephilia (2007), co-editor of the Palgrave Macmillan book series Framing Film Festivals, co-editor of NECUS series on festivals and co- founder of FFRN), Jean-Michel Frodon (Sciences Po, global film critic affiliated with various international festivals), Dr. Dorota Ostrowska (Birkbeck College, author of studies on Cannes Film Festival), Hannah McGill (Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, British film critic and former director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival), and Marco Müller (Artistic Director of the Pingyao International Film Festival in China, and former artistic director of film festivals in Pesaro, Turin, Locarno, and Venice IFF).

The event is hosted by the IGCCC (Institute of Global Cinema and Creative Cultures, University of St Andrews) and LUNA (London Network of Contemporary Film Exhibition Cultures).

The event will take place at Birkbeck, University of London and was organised thanks to the generous support of the Birkbeck Interdisciplinary Research in Media and Culture (BIRMAC).
