The Tiberius Psalter contains the Psalms in Latin and Old English but is most famous for its cycle of 23 pictures, mostly drawings in coloured outline but with two fully painted pages. The basis for the images can be found in half-a-dozen elite manuscripts located at Winchester and Canterbury and it seems the artist had direct access to them. Although always categorised as late Anglo-Saxon, the book was certainly made after Easter 1063, and for a senior churchman. A likely candidate is Stigand, archbishop of Canterbury and bishop of Winchester. An analysis of the subject matter of the pictures suggests it was probably commissioned between 1067 and 1070.
The seminar takes place in the History of Art Department at Birkbeck (43, Gordon Sq., London WC1H 0PD) in Room 114 (The Keynes Library) at 5.00 pm. The talks finish by 5.50 pm (so those with other commitments can leave) and will be followed by discussion and refreshments. No booking is required.
