Reading group Flora Triumphans (1712)

When:
Venue: TBC

No booking required

Hannah Armstrong (History of Art, Birkbeck) lead reading and discussion of the anonymous poem .

Flora Triumphans celebrates the recently completed landscape improvements carried out by leading gardeners of the day, George London and Henry Wise. Studying the poem alongside a series of views published by Kip and Knyff, helps to construct an understanding of how the garden appeared and how it compared to other major country seats in England.

This session included a brief reading of a passage in the poem, and address issues such as the use of classical allegories throughout and how this may have enhanced or benefitted Child's reputation amongst the newly moneyed elite, as well as a general discussion about the role of country house poetry.
