The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics invites you to an annual event in remembrance of Professor Ronald Tress who was Master of Birkbeck and established the College's economics department.

We are delighted to announce that this year, we will be joined by Professor Sir Adrian Smith FRS, a distinguished British statistician and Vice-Chancellor of the University of London. Professor Smith has been appointed as Institute Director of The Alan Turing Institute and will take up his new role in Autumn this year.

Professor Smith was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001 in recognition of his contribution to statistics and received a knighthood in the 2011 New Year Honours list. He was previously Director General of Knowledge and Innovation in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

For the previous 10 years, Professor Smith was Principal of Queen Mary University of London and prior to this, held several posts at Imperial College, London over an eight-year period. These included: Professor of Statistics, Head of Department of Mathematics, Member of the Management and Planning Group and Company Director of ICON (Imperial Consultancy).

Professor Smith will speak on The Challenges of Big Data, drawing from his experience in academia, as a Non-Executive Member of the Board for the Office for National Statistics, and as former President of the Royal Statistical Society.
