Abstract:

We are delighted to invite you to a Qualitative 'Methods in Action' day event, hosted by the Department of Organizational Psychology's Qualitative Research Group.

The day will feature a mix of presentations and panel discussions by academic staff and PhD students from the department. The theme will be exploring paradigms, namely those philosophical and theoretical assumptions that underpin research and which shape the different methodologies we use. Paradigms have important implications for data collection and analysis and for how research contributes to new knowledge and understanding. We'll also be reprising our popular session of 3 minute talks featuring a selection of current PhD students and staff.

We are also delighted to announce that the keynote address will be given by Professor Joanne Duberley at Birmingham Business School. She is Professor of Organization Studies and Interim Director of Research for the College of Social Sciences. Joanne's research focuses on the concept of career. She has led a number of projects exploring careers in a variety of contexts, including academic scientists, women entrepreneurs, NHS managers and women approaching retirement. She has received funding for this from ESRC, the British Academy and NHS SDO. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Joanne has published widely including in the Journal of Vocational Behavior, Gender Work & Organization, the British Journal of Management, Organization, and Work, Employment & Society.

Other speakers from the Department will include Dr Almuth McDowall, Dr Andreas Liefooghe, Dr Vanessa Iwowo and Clare Laurent, all talking about their research from a variety of philosophical perspectives. The aim of the event is to deliver an informal overview of some of the innovative or less traditional methods (reflecting a range of underpinning philosophies) that are currently being used in the qualitative research undertaken in the department. There will be plenty of opportunity to talk to staff and PhD students about their work and to find out more about these methods and what these can contribute to knowledge and understanding in organizational and management research.
