It doesn’t matter if it’s still just an idea or if you’ve found your dream course, and want to know how to get a place, Get Started is for you!
To make an application to university, you have to write a personal statement explaining your motivations for studying, your interest in the course and what sets you apart from other applicants. This can be daunting, but fear not, help is at hand!
This free, friendly and interactive workshop, Writing your personal statement, will give you the chance to:
- think about your personal motivations and life experience and find out how these are relevant to your personal statement
- start drafting your personal statement
- learn about how to get feedback on your personal statement from our experienced staff
- meet one of our fantastic students and find out more about studying at Birkbeck!
The workshop is open to those who have selected an undergraduate course, which they want to apply for, and are looking for some help and support with the personal statement.
We will send you some pre-course materials in advance to help you to prepare for the session and we encourage you to complete these beforehand to enable you to get the most out of the workshop.
Sign up and reserve your space!

What is Get Started?
Get Started is a series of free workshops for prospective students from all ages, backgrounds and subject areas, who are interested in embarking on an undergraduate course at Birkbeck.
The Get Started programme consists of three workshops. Prospective students can attend all three or just select the one(s) which are most relevant:
(1) Preparing to study and making an application
(2) Writing a personal statement
(3) Student finance
All three workshops are free, provide a friendly and interactive opportunity to ask questions and are open to all undergraduate applicants. Get Started participants will be eligible to attend a workshop delivered by the Birkbeck Careers and Employability team, to help them develop their employability skills and reflect on the connection between career and study choices. You will receive an invite to sign up to this exclusive offer once you have attended at least one Get Started workshop.
