The New Black Film Collective, in partnership with Birkbeck, University of London and NUSHO presents a cosmic month of film, culture & entertainment to explore new frontiers of black history reflected in cinema and discover the contribution to science originating from Africa. This interactive celebration of art & science will take over Stratford Picturehouse every Thursday in October 2014.
GEDS Senior Lecturer in Urban Studies, Dr Paul Watt will join Khadija Nawaz from the East Thames Housing Association in a panel hosted by Yvonne Connikie from The New Black Film Collective.
The panelists will use the screening of Attack the Block (2011, dir. Joe Cornish), a sci-fi film about the invasion of alien monsters on a London estate, as an excuse to discuss the London housing crisis in the 1960s and its effects on the current housing situation of the Black communities in the capital.
The event will take place on Thursday, 23rd October at 8.30pm at the Stratford Picturehouse (www.picturehouses.co.uk).
This event is part of Birkbeck's celebrations of the Black History Month, in association with the New Black Film Collective and the NU Social Health Organisation. More details can be found here: www.tnbfc.co.uk
