Birkbeck Classical World Open Afternoon

When:
Venue: Birkbeck 28 Russell Square

No booking required

This Open Afternoon gives you the opportunity to meet lecturers and students and learn about their work on the Classical world at Birkbeck.

The event will be of particular interest to those considering joining us to study for BA Classics/Classical Studies or Ancient History and Archaeology, and MA Classics/Classical Civilisation or or MA Classical Archaeology. All our courses can be taken full-time or part-time, with all teaching in the evenings (6-8 p.m.)

Lecturers will talk about their research and its links with current concerns, including the current syllabus for Classical Civilisation A-Level. Topics will include debt, democracy and migration in ancient Greek history and archaeology and, on the Roman side, the philosopher Seneca's relations with the emperor Nero.

There will also be a chance to learn more and ask questions about our different degrees and the experience of studying the Classical world at Birkbeck.

The event is open to those of all ages with an interest in the Greek and Roman worlds, including school pupils from year 10 upwards.

You may wish to combine your visit with attendance at the broader Open Afternoon for the whole department, covering all periods of history and archaeology (3–5 p.m. in the same building), and to go on afterwards to the department’s Eric Hobsbawm Memorial Lecture by the distinguished historian of Late Antiquity and the Medieval World, Prof. C. Wickham, on re-thinking pre-modern economies (starting at 6 p.m.).

Attendance is free, booking required.

Reserve your place here.
