Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies - Inaugural Annual NGO Lecture: Shadow Reporting at the United Nations

The UN relies on civil society to present 'shadow' or 'alternative' reports to all of the human rights treaty monitoring bodies and to the Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review. This provides the opportunity for Civil Society to provide its views on how well countries are meeting their responsibilities under human rights treaties. NGOs can highlight issues not raised by their governments or point out where their governments may be trying to mislead monitoring bodies through their own reporting to Committees.

We have two speakers to discuss their experiences of shadow reporting.

1) Elizabeth Sclater, Secretary General, Older Women's Network, Europe who will talk about shadow reporting to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

2) And the Co-Director, Children's Rights Alliance for England, who will talk about UN Committee on the Rights of the Child's 2015 call for a shadow report.

Followed by Q & A and refreshments.

This event is free and open to all, but places are limited and booking is essential - book your place here: https://eventbrite.co.uk/event/16398416104/
