How can we reimagine the past? We’re used to history as a narrative of events through time: one thing after another. But what kind of history can we tell if we present not narrative but the cut-and-paste of collage? In this session, Adam Smyth (Oxford) and Gill Partington (Cambridge) will consider three case studies of collage-as-historical representation, to rethink ways of understanding the past: a commonplace book composed by an imprisoned Civil War Royalist in the 1650s; Joe Orton’s (very bawdy) collaged book jackets from the 1960s; and a creative reconstruction of one day from 1911. How can collage help us rethink history?
