Bernard Herrmann: the ultimate movie composer?
When:

Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
No booking required
Bernard Herrmann created classic scores for Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock, and ended his career by composing Taxi Driver for Martin Scorsese. Exploring his career is a lesson in Hollywood history and the vital role of music in cinema. But Herrmann should also be seen as part of the history of modern music, using similar techniques to those of the great concert composers.
Ian Christie picks key works by Herrmann, including his radical score for Psycho, and composer Julian Philips, head of composition at Guildhall School of Music and a successful opera and ballet composer, will place Herrmann in the context of 20th century music.
