Rhodes Workshop Communities of Production and Consumption, 9th 6th c. BC

As a significant point of contact in the eastern Mediterranean, the island of Rhodes was subject to power politics ranging from Assyrian, Persian and Athenian imperialism during the first millennium BC. These interactions fostered a diverse material culture that can aid our understanding of Archaic Greek networks and the formation of Greek cultural identity.
What was the extent of the local craft production on the island? Can we distinguish regional differences? To what degree was local production shaped by the island's role in international networks? How was local and foreign material culture used to negotiate social and cultural identities? These are some of the questions that this workshop will address.
