Floating islands in contemporary art

When:
Venue: Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square

No booking required

This lecture explores ways in which modern and contemporary artists have adopted the theme of the 'floating island'. Looking at some vivid examples of installation and performance art, film and sculpture, Gill Perry argues that recent artistic representations of this theme have a special relevance in an era wrestling with problems of climate change, migration, rising tides of nationalism and international tourism. In her discussion of so-called 'island' works by artists Robert Smithson, Andrea Zittel, Alex Hartley and Ai Weiwei (among others) she considers ways in which various fabricated, floating constructions can provoke and engage the viewer to think critically about our relationship with the natural and the artificial world.
