Join us for a roundtable discussion on current attitudes towards immigration, hosted by the Birkbeck Department of Politics . Chaired by Professor Rosie Campbell with speakers Professor Eric Kaufmann, Dr Kristoffer Ahlstrom-Vij & Anna Killick.
The plight of many contemporary members of the Windrush generation has served as a moving reminder of the lives affected by government policy on immigration. Much of this policy was designed to respond to voters' concerns about rising immigration. Certainly, interpretations of the publics' attitudes to immigration have had a profound effect on our politics in recent years. Since the early 2000s the salience of immigration has risen up the public agenda prompting the parties to promise reductions in absolute numbers and setting targets for net migration as well apparently as repatriations. In this roundtable experts on public attitudes towards immigration debate how the statistics should be interpreted and how citizens, politicians and parties might respond.

Rosie Campbell is a Professor of Politics at Birkbeck, University of London. She has recently written on what voters want from their parliamentary candidates, attitudes to MPs' roles, the politics of diversity and gender and voting behaviour. She is the principle investigator of the ESRC funded Representative Audit of Britain, which surveyed all candidates standing in the 2015 and 2017 British General Elections.
Eric Kaufmann is Professor of Politics at Birkbeck, University of London. He is the author of Changing Places: mapping the white British response to ethnic change (Demos 2014), Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth (Profile 2010), The Rise and Fall of Anglo-America (Harvard 2004) and two other books. He is co-editor, among others, of Political Demography (Oxford 2012) and editor of Rethinking Ethnicity: Majority Groups and Dominant Minorities (Routledge 2004). His next book is Whiteshift: Immigration, Populism and the Future of White Majorities (Penguin, October 2018).
Kristoffer Ahlstrom-Vij is a Reader in philosophy at Birkbeck. He specialises in the foundations and applications of social epistemology, and is currently working on how to make anti-immigration sentiments responsive to evidence of the economic benefits of immigration, as Visiting Fellow at the the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).
Anna Killick is a former teacher and now doctoral researcher at the University of Southampton currently completing an empirical study into how everyday actors understand the term the economy which raises questions about attitudes to immigration.
