This session brings together two films of an unfinished triology by the late Senegalese film director Djibril Diop Mambéty (January 1945 – July 23, 1998).

Le Franc (1994, 46', DCP)

This comic fable focuses on the Chaplinesque figure of poverty-stricken musician Marigo. Like Mambéty's other work Le Franc is both a reflection on the effects of Western economic restrictions on Africa and a highly symbolic, humane drama.

La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil (1999, 45', DCP)

Performed by a non-professional cast, Mambéty's film centre's around a young paraplegic girl and her attempts to enter the world of the male newspaper vendors. The film departs from realism and establishes a richly comic and satirical engagement with Senegal infused with an excellent score courtesy of Mambéty's brother Wasis Diop.
