Annual Public Lecture 'Rt Hon David Lammy MP'
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Clore Management Centre
Our invitation to Mr Lammy to be the BPL Public Lecturer reflected our desire to hear from a London political actor who was asking tough political questions and by so doing was creating a political agenda that in many ways challenges political certainty and complacency. David Lammy has made significant representations on behalf of those affected by Grenfell Tower, and has challenged those who both query his right to act in this way and to adopt the impassioned tones that he has. His interventions on politics, race and diversity, and on Brexit, have also constituted significant challenges to contemporary political debate in the UK.
David has been the Labour Member of Parliament for his home constituency of Tottenham since 2000.
Born in Tottenham in 1972, one of five children raised by a single mother. David was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1994, practised as a barrister in England and the United States and became the first black Briton to study at Harvard Law School, graduating in 1997.
David served as a Minister in the last Labour government, including as Culture Minister and Higher Education Minister, and was appointed to the Privy Council in 2008.
David is currently a high profile backbencher, leading campaigns for the rights of the Windrush generation, on justice for Grenfell Tower victims, on Oxbridge access, and as lead spokesperson for the People’s Vote campaign.
David lives in Haringey with his wife and three children.
