Join us for the latest Criminology Careers Event from the Department of Criminology.

Key questions that will be discussed include:

  • What are the challenges and opportunities involved in social justice and social impact careers?
  • What are the skills and experiences that students need to develop to achieve roles in such competitive sectors and organisations

Practical issues covered include:

  • Skills and experiences necessary to work in the sector
  • 'A day in the life' of working in the sector
  • Mapping route ways into work

About The Speakers

Roz Currie is a curator at Islington Museum. She has worked as a museum curator for over ten years and believes in supporting people to make their voices heard. As curator at Islington Museum she has worked with local community groups, most recently looking at the impact of the closure of Holloway Prison in the Echoes of Holloway Prison project, but also in exhibitions and projects looking at the fight against apartheid in Islington, the Spanish Civil War and the story of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act and its impact on gay men in Islington. As curator at the Jewish Museum she curated exhibitions including ‘For King and Country? The Jewish story of the First World War’, ‘Blackguards in Bonnets’ about Jewish Suffragettes and ‘The Boys: Memory Quilts’ working with child Holocaust survivors.

Clare Robertson is a theatre producer with a particular focus on campaigning theatre and the arts as a driver of social change. Currently, she is Producer for Cardboard Citizens. From 2015 – 2018 she was General Manager/Producer for Belarus Free Theatre. Clare is currently completing a Master’s degree in Human Rights at Birkbeck.

Jess and Matt Turtle co-founded the Museum of Homelessness in 2015. Both have MAs; Curating Contemporary Design, Kingston (Matt) and Psychosocial Studies, Birkbeck (Jess). They are visiting tutors at Kings College London. They’ve had various jobs in arts and heritage over the years. Jess currently works part-time as inclusion manager for the Museums Association.

Please note that this event is open only to current Criminology and Arts Management students at Birkbeck.

About Criminology Careers Events
Criminology Careers Events introduce students to criminology related employers and the opportunities and challenges involved in developing a career path. Events cover:

  • The practicalities of developing a career, from work experience to recruitment.
  • Themes relevant to criminology research and teaching, from criminal justice policy and practice to social and racial justice.

Each session lasts 90 minutes, and involves short talks from a panel of professionals who explain how they arrived at their current role. There is opportunity for group Q&A as well as informal 1-1 time with speakers. Events are an opportunity to socialise with peers in the department. Refreshments and snacks are provided.
