Critical Hate Studies in Theory and Praxis: Myth, Identity and Order
Speaker: Dr Jennifer Neller (Birkbeck, University of London)
Abstract: This talk explores the intersection between critical legal theory and the more praxis-oriented field of hate studies in relation to research on the enactment of the stirring up hatred offences of England and Wales. It will be shown how different approaches to criticality affect how the research findings can be framed, ultimately revealing troubling continuities between the logics of hate speech and advocacy of hate speech law. This is especially timely in light of the Law Commission’s recent consultation on hate crime law, which included several proposals for further extensions to this area of criminal law.
About The Speaker
Dr Jennifer Neller recently completed her PhD at Birkbeck School of Law, where she is an Associate Tutor of EU Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law and Criminal Law. She is the co-author of Pearson’s Law of the European Union and is currently converting her doctoral thesis into a monograph for publication with Palgrave Macmillan’s Hate Studies series in 2022.
