‘Green Capital: The Lie at the End of the World?’

Professor Fiona Macmillan (Professor of Law, Birkbeck)

With a little bit of help from Anna Tsing's book, The Mushroom at the end of the World (Princeton University Press, 2015) and Andreas Malm's, Corona, Climate, Chronic Emergency (Verso, 2020) this seminar will reflect pessimistically on the prospects of "greening" the legal infrastructure that holds together global processes of capital accumulation, with a particular focus on the role of international economic law in this respect. As a pre-Christmas antidote to pessimism,  the seminar will examine (with guarded optimism) the prospects for a revolutionary approach to the intractable problem of the nature-capital relationship in the hoped for post-pandemic period.
