Luuk van Middelaar (Leiden) is a political theorist, historian, former speechwriter for Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, 2010-2015 as well as a leading author on the European Union.

In this event he will present his new book Pandemonium: Saving Europe (Agenda Publishing, 2021) and will engage with a panel of distinguished academics, officials and commentators in a conversation on the EU’s reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications for the process of European integration more broadly.

She began her career in journalism by winning in 2006 the Nico Colchester Journalism Fellowship awarded by the Economist and the Financial Times. Before journalism, Jennifer worked for the UK think-tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research. She is a member of our Jean Monnet Chair’s advisory panel.

    Luuk van Middelaar: is Professor of Foundations and Practice of the European Union and its Institutions at the Europa Institute of Leiden University. He is a political theorist, historian, a leading author on the European Union as well as former adviser to and speechwriter for Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, 2010-2015.

    Peter Wagner is a Principal Adviser for « Coordination of COVID-19 related issues » in the Secretariat General of the European Commission.  He has held a variety of senior posts within the European Commission including in the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations, the Task Force for Greece, and the Directorate-General for Enterprise and industry.

    Hussein Kassim (University of East Anglia) is Professor of Politics, a scholar of public administration and public policy, whose research investigates (inter alia) EU institutions, the relationship between the EU and the member states. He is a member of our Jean Monnet Chair’s advisory panel.
