Note: this event is a walking tour that starts outside St Paul's Underground Station.
Explore Renaissance crime and punishment by walking in the ancient precincts of the City of London. In-person.
What were the most feared crimes of Renaissance London – and why? This walk explores the locations of crime and the institutions of punishment in the ancient precincts of the City of London. As London became the centre of an emerging empire, it expanded at a furious pace – and its new printing industry fed its inhabitants’ fears and fantasies of seething sedition, theft and murder. Even as they walked past the institutions of punishment every day, Londoners felt that crime stalked amongst them, even, perhaps, in the hearts of their wives and husbands. Join our team of London Renaissance Seminar thief-catchers for tall tales and criminal histories.
